People
The population of the district is 8,50,000 approximately, including about 52,689+ living in the town. The colourful people are descended from the Grouches of the eastern Nepal ; Tibetans, Lamas in yellow robes and women in striped aprons, ornaments and brocades; Gurungs from western Nepal tending goats and cattle; fair-skinned Sikkim Bhutias and Lepchas; the Dukpas of Bhutan and the plainsmen escaping the sweltering heat.

Another class of people, with aquiline noses, broad foreheads and large eyes and tall stature are of Aryan stock and descended from the Rajput refugees who fled India at various stages of her turbulent history. They brought with them, Hinduism. To them belong the Upadhyayas, the Brahmins, the socially prominent Thakurs and the Chettris.

The common language(Nepalese language) spoken is understood by all residing in Darjeeling and its allied areas. It uses the Devnagari script. The great Hindu epic Ramayana has been translated to Nepali by a Nepali poet named Bhanu Bhakta who lived in the last century. The birthday of Bhakta holds a special significance for the Nepalese people.

Food & Wine
Apart from being the best tourist destination, Darjeeling is also renowned for its food and wine especially momos and tongbas respectively.

Momos
"Momos drive the tourists nuts" is the phrase heard from restaurant owners who sell momos. Momos found in Nepal are not momos, but momochas which is totally different from the momos found in Darjeeling . Darjeeling momos are exceptionally mouth watering and the locals say that no one can have just one, but more and more.

Tongba or local beer is not only popular among the locals but tourists as well. These local beers are not readily available everywhere, but in special restaurants as Hot Stimulating Cafe near Shrubbery Park . Tongbas consume a lot of time to drink because the juice from the ingredients has to seep into the water which is poured from top. Its taste can only be felt when one drinks it and the best of all, it is said to be 100% free alcohol.

Ethnicity And Food Habits
The people of the region - Darjeeling , Kalimpong and Mirik - consist of the Gurungs from Western Nepal , other Gurkhas races from eastern Nepal , Bhutias and Lepchas from Sikkim and Dukpas from Bhutan . People from the plains have also settled here. The local fare is rice and meat curry and momos which are steamed dumplings, and of course, chow, the locally made noodles. This generally accompanied by chhang, a locally brewed wine made from millet or the jaad which is made from fermented rice. The Gurkhas are staunch Hindus and celebrate all Hindu festivals with equal dedication. But Dussehra is the most popular Gurkha festival. .
